The Money Nobody Came to Collect

August 16, 2026
The Money Nobody Came to Collect

Something surprised me this week reading that, SEBI's annual report says ₹3,811 crore of mutual fund money is just sitting there. Unclaimed. Nobody came to collect it.

Most of it isn't even redemption money. It is dividends. Old bank accounts that got closed. Addresses that changed. KYC that lapsed. Cheques that nobody deposited. And over the period of time slowly, the money just... disappeared from the family's memory.

We all spend energy picking the right fund, tracking returns, timing the market. But the simplest thing making sure your family knows where your money is, keeping your bank details updated, having a nominee in place, that part somehow never feels urgent.

Until it is.

There is a tool called MITRA on MF Central that lets you trace old, forgotten investments. Worth a five-minute check in coming week?
