Term Insurance Before Your First Salary?

September 3, 2026
Term Insurance Before Your First Salary?

So, I was reading something interesting today. Few insurers are recently offering term insurance to students as young as 18. My first reaction was probably the same as yours - why would a student, with no salary or family depending on them, need life insurance?

Then I thought about education loans. Many families spend a sizeable amount on higher education, sometimes taking on debt along the way. In such cases having some protection around that financial commitment may actually make sense.

There is another angle too. At 18 or 20, you are generally healthier, so getting insured can be easier and the premium lower. But does that mean every student should rush to buy a term plan? I don't think so.

For me, insurance should follow responsibility, not simply age. If there is a meaningful financial burden that could fall on the family, it's worth thinking about.

Otherwise, perhaps there is no hurry. Just my personal opinion.
