India's insurance market just got its first 100% foreign-owned entrant

July 24, 2026

Something worth watching is taking shape in the Insurance space.

Blackstone has partnered with Anuj Tyagi — former MD and CEO of HDFC ERGO — to launch a new general insurance company in India. The R1 application with IRDAI is already filed and under review.

What makes this different from a routine new entrant: this would be the first general insurer with 90% foreign ownership since India raised the FDI limit in insurance to 100%. That policy shift happened earlier this year. This is the first serious move to test it.

The more interesting detail is the architecture. Rather than retrofitting AI onto a legacy platform, the venture intends to build AI-native from day one — generative and agentic AI across underwriting, claims, servicing, and distribution.

India's general insurance market crosses ₹3 lakh crore in annual gross direct premium. It is underpenetrated and under-digitised. A well-capitalised, technology-first entrant with serious leadership could change that calculus.

Worth watching IRDAI next steps for R1 application.
