Bought an SGB 5 years ago & wish to Exit, Read this.

As you are aware on Sovereign Gold Bonds, a lot of us bought a few years back? Just to note, this August is giving some of those investors a small but important window to exit early, before the full 8-year maturity.
Want to know how it works? The government allows you to redeem SGBs after 5 years, but only on specific dates tied to your bond series. If you miss that window and you either wait for the next cycle or sell on the stock exchange which can be tricky if there are not enough buyers.
The exit price isn't what you paid. It is based on the average gold price in the 3 days before redemption. So, if gold has done well and it has, you could be walking away with a solid gain. Plus, premature redemption is completely tax-free on capital gains. That is the part most people don't realize.
If you hold an SGB, check two things - has it completed 5 years, and is your series on the August eligible list? Then walk into your bank or log onto RBI Retail Direct and submit the request before the deadline.
Do not wait for a reminder. These windows are silent and quick.
