Some Problems Solar Panels Cannot Fix

July 19, 2026
Source: economictimes.indiatimes.com

Some emissions cannot be solved by adding more solar panels.

Industries like cement and steel release carbon dioxide as part of the manufacturing process itself. Even if these plants run on clean electricity, a portion of their emissions remains unavoidable.

This is where carbon capture becomes important.

As per 20th June 2026 update, India has now approved a ₹19,700 crore scheme to support Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), targeting sectors such as power, steel, cement, refining and chemicals. The objective isn't to eliminate emissions overnight. It is to build the infrastructure, technology and economics required for decarbonising industries that have few alternatives.

The initial target of capturing 7 million tonnes of CO₂ annually is modest relative to India's total emissions. But every large transition starts with building capability before building scale.

For long-term investors, this is less about carbon credits and more about identifying industries, technologies and engineering businesses that could participate in India's next phase of industrial decarbonisation. A business opportunity to keep an eye upon.
